A Fresher Breeze For UKs Power Industry~UK Wind Farms

January 17, 2010 by

Going green is an agenda that the UK is giving a lot of priority as of late. The UK Government is said to be spending as much as £100 billion on wind farms to be built on coasts on various parts of the UK.

Key energy suppliers such as Scottish Power, Southern Energy and E.On are reported to have been on the tables along with quite a few other companies to make the programme materialize. Several neighboring European companies are also said to be trying to cash-in on the deal.

The project will turn into a turning point in the country’s power generation industry as it will make the UK as a country with one of the most biggest wind farms in the planet. Given that the plan doesn’t bump into any drawbacks along the way. 2014 is said to be the time where the wind turbines will be erected.

Even though this is the third wind farm project for the kingdom, the previous two pales in comparison to this one.

Presently, existing wind turbines are fixed at the ocean floor 25km off the coast and beneath a water depth of 25m. For the latest wind farm project, windmills will be placed at a deepness of 60 meters and 205 km further off coast.

The Government is hopeful that these brand new wind farms will deliver 1/3 of the country’s energy requirements after 10 years. Various zones in the United Kingdom are found to have good steady wind blow to twirl turbines practically always. A few of these are the Irish Sea, Isle of Wight, Hornsea, Bristol Channel and the largest spot is said to be designated at Dogger Bank.

If the latest project becomes a reality, as much as 32 gigawatts of electricity will be the output and allocated to nearby residences.

In addition, the UK is said to have a very efficient wind power. Estimates say that the UK has a sufficient amount of wind resource to power the nation three times.

The amount of output will vary depending on every wind farm. The biggest site which is said will be at Dogger Bank will produce 9,000 megawatts of electricity while the smallest is believed to create up to 600 megawatts of power.

Using wind farms to generate electricity will be beneficial to the country’s atmosphere and power reliance but it still has some cons. For one, the quantity of watts that gets generated is dictated by the speed of the wind and wind blows can halt any time.

Compared to gas and coal power plants, wind farms are often costlier because of the new technology necessary to make turbines more effective and maintainable.

The country has recently made attempts to harness energy through environmentally friendly measures. One of which is laying wave energy generators also along the coast which harness power from waves which is pretty much limitless.

Also, allocation of funds is going to be used to build nuclear power plants. Although nuclear power is not a fool-proof environmental answer, it does not give off greenhouse gases as those of gas or coal power plants but the threat of nuclear fallout is constantly there.

If the nation gets its source of energy from environmentally sound methods such as wind farms, a much more cleaner and energy efficient UK will benefit more citizens through cheaper energy price and creation of jobs.

Imagine a very long lever, one end connected to a floating dock, 100 yards offshore, the pivot on the beach, the other end 1000 yards away connected to linkage driving a traditional generator with “train wheel” linkage. How much torque is generated at the lever end given a tidal rise of 6 feet in 7 hours?

  3. tword on June 4th, 2010 8:52 pm

Normally, tides would cause both the moon and the planet to lose their energy. But the Earth spins in roughly the same direction as the Moon orbits it, which causes the tidal bulge to "speed ahead" of where it should normally be. This creates a torque which speeds the Moon up in its orbit, but slows the Earth down.

    Quoted from Wikipedia:

"The gravitational torque between the Moon and the tidal bulge of the Earth causes the Moon to be promoted in its orbit, and the Earth to be decelerated in its rotation. As in any physical process, total energy and angular momentum are conserved. Effectively, energy and angular momentum are transferred from the rotation of the Earth to the orbital motion of the Moon."

The curse of the Irish people has always been two-fold where the UK has been concerned. The first is that the Irish Sea is not nearly the impediment to the British Navy that the Atlantic Ocean was, logistically speaking. The second, however, is that whenever you gathered four conspirators together to plot resistance to the UK, you had three fools and an informant… except on those instances when you had three informers and one fool.

Oil reserves 'exaggerated by one third'

The world's oil reserves have been exaggerated by up to a third, according to Sir David King, the Government's former chief scientist, who has warned of shortages and price spikes within years.

The scientist and researchers from Oxford University argue that official figures are inflated because member countries of the oil cartel, OPEC, over-reported reserves in the 1980s when competing for global market share.

Their new research argues that estimates of conventional reserves should be downgraded from 1,150bn to 1,350bn barrels to between 850bn and 900bn barrels and claims that demand may outstrip supply as early as 2014. The researchers claim it is an open secret that OPEC is likely to have inflated its reserves, but that the International Energy Agency (IEA), BP, the Energy Information Administration and World Oil do not take this into account in their statistics.

“It is necessary to investigate ambiguities and sources of error that are broadly acknowledged but not taken into account in public data due to political sensitivities,” the researchers said. The paper also raises concerns that public statistics have started to incorporate non-conventional reserves such as the Canadian tar sands, where oil and gas are much more difficult to extract and may never be economically attractive to develop.

Sir David said that although the IEA was doing a good job of warning that more investment in oil and gas exploration is needed, governments need to pay more attention to independent research.

“The IEA functions through fees that are paid into it by member companies and has to keep its clients happy,” he said. “We're not operating under that basis. This is objective analysis. We're not sitting on any oil fields. It's critically important that reserves have been overstated, and if you take this into account, we're talking supply not meeting demand in 2014-2015.”

The concept of “peak oil” has gained traction in recent years, although energy companies such as BP and Shell insist that production will be able to keep pace with growing Asian energy needs.

Sir David said he was “very concerned” that Western governments were not taking the concept of “peak oil” – where demand outstrips production – seriously enough, while China is throwing all its efforts into grabbing as many energy resources as possible.

Sir Richard Branson , founder of the Virgin Group, and Ian Marchant, chief executive of Scottish & Southern Energy, are members of the Peak Oil Industry Taskforce, which is trying to raise awareness of potential shortages in the coming decade.

Dr Oliver Inderwildi, who co-wrote the paper with Sir David and Nick Owen for Oxford University's Smith School, believes radical measures such as switching freight transport to airships could become common in future.

“The belief that alternative fuels such as biofuels could mitigate oil supply shortages and eventually replace fossil fuels is a pie in the sky. Instead of relying on those silver bullet solutions, we have to make better use of the remaining resources by improving efficiency.”

'….process all fresh ash produced and all ash currently stored in lagoons at the site over a period of up to 25 years.

It is expected that the plant will be able to process up to 800,000 tonnes of ash per annum.

By providing an alternative to the use of the limestone kilning process, it is estimated that the new plant will help to reduce carbon emissions by around 500,000 tonnes a year. '

The fact that they intend to process ash from lagoon stores provides hope for Radley Lakes and others around the country that restoration may be possible. This could be sped up by the government providing financial carrot & stick incentives.

Market demand for the end products has to be there of course and this should factor in export potential.

It sounds as though the RockTron plant will be running at full capacity for now with the ash supplied from the Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station so, that leaves the Radley Lakes campaign's idea of recycling Didcot's ash hanging in the air. Npower appear not to be a progressive thinking company in this area of operations.

With the government's recent announcement to encourage the building of 3 million homes over the next decade or so it would appear Npower are not thinking of this market potential as far as building blocks are concerned. If I was a shareholder I would be asking serious questions of Npower management's ability to think strategically and maximise the valueof the business. Maybe RWE are the problem.]]>
