Easy Custom Labels for Your Medications

August 31, 2009 by

I am married and 65 years young. I graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Drexel University and worked for over 35 years as an IT (Information Technology) Consultant in my own company, Odyssey Data Systems, Inc. My IT background gave me the skills to analyze and solve many complex business problems.

As I grew older, I found that both my wife and I began taking more and more medications and vitamins. Some were brand names and others were generic versions. Some were marked “Take as needed”, meaning that they stayed in the medicine cabinet until they expired (really forever). Others started as brand names and once they were refilled, became generic versions (the names of which were almost indistinguishable). All pharmacy labels showed what was in the bottle, how much to take and how often; but hardly ever indicated what the medications or vitamins were to be used for.

In addition, whenever we saw a new doctor, he or she always wanted to know what medications we were currently taking. So, we gathered the bottles and tubes, put them in a bag and diligently carried them to the initial consultation. Of course, we then had to return them to the proper location in our medicine cabinet, so as not to be further confused.

If, god-forbid, we needed to see a new doctor in an emergency, that vital information was not immediately available, therefore being extremely dangerous. Well, fully realizing that we were not the only people to have these problems, I began the project of solving them with a type of medication identification help. I then formed my new company – Labels-4-Meds, LLC, in September of 2007.

The premise was simple – develop a web site to permit people to customize and purchase small, but extremely distinguishable medication labels and vitamin labels. Each medication sticker would contain a particular shape in a particular color (like a red heart) to have immediate and special meaning to the individual (like my wife’s heart medication). In addition, the person could customize the word or words to print on the label, in bold black letters (like Blood Pressure), to clearly indicate the medication’s or vitamin’s usage.

Since the information about the medication or vitamin had to be entered to identify the particular label, then a secondary benefit resulted; that being an index sheet which listed all the medications and vitamins, their color, shape, usage word(s) and optionally: their brand or generic name and dosage.

This was all done inexpensively with lots of documentation, examples and step-by-step instructions. There is obviously much more to this, than is necessary in this brief introduction. If you, your parents, your neighbor or your patient could benefit by helping them to be less confused about their medications, then please look us up on-line at Labels4Meds.com .

You struck a chord with me, I am a Mechanical Engineer who took as many anthro classes as I could. I find that an understanding of those you are designing for makes for excellent devices.

You might be interested in reading about IDEO's (among other consultancies) cooperation with the Rockefeller foundation in a project they call “Design For Social Impact”. Many of us (I am a Mechanical Engineer myself) working in the design industry see it as the next ripe opportunity (what medical devices were a decade ago).

The developing world is full of problems that would best be solved by low-tech, well designed solutions. It's an exciting time to be working in this realm.

Keep up the good work, it's a wonderful read

    @ #5 Cute vid, Pupst. “I don't buy my own tires…” Funny.
My thoughts exactly about original vid.

#6 Got it Geez. That's what I thought you meant. You were clear.

Russ, I loved how the movie painted a picture of this man driven to such a goal that he would risk it all physically while using his mind and craft to pursue faster and faster speeds. Amazing human. A maniacal mechanical engineer, huh?

#9 Pinto, even the movie sorta tells you this guy is a rough-edged character. Not surprised by your assessment.

The “policy community” has a lot of the same players as the Clinton Task Force on Healthcare Reform. There's a combination of vested special interests (as in information technology venders and Big Phrma), ideologic zealotry (as in academics) and a combination as in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and other do-gooders. Docs in the trenches are not part of the picture.

Four engineers found friendship in college and, years later, were reunited and taking a road trip together. Unfortunately, the car broke down. The mechanical engineer from Boeing said “The wheels. I'll bet it's the wheels.”The chemical engineer from Dow argued “No, it's the gas, didn't you hear how the engine died?”The electrical engineer from NASA said “My bet is on the wiring.”The computer science engineer from Microsoft suggested “Hey guys, how about we all just get out and back in and see if that fixes it?”

Sandy – Glad you liked it lol.

    There's a similar one about 4 engineers:

There are four engineers travelling in a car: a mechanical engineer, a chemical engineer, an electrical engineer and a computer engineer. The car breaks down.
“Sounds to me as if the pistons have seized. We'll have to strip down the engine before we can get the car working again”, says the mechanical engineer.
“Well”, says the chemical engineer, “it sounded to me as if the fuel might be contaminated. I think we should clear out the fuel system.”
“I thought it might be an grounding problem”, says the electrical engineer, “or maybe a faulty plug lead.”
They all turn to the computer engineer who has said nothing and say: “Well, what do you think?”
“Ummm perhaps if we all get out of the car and get back in again?”

Thanks for dropping by and leaving comment :o )]]>
