Making Ugly Business Communications

Communication lies at the heart of any business. You should never write as though you were having a conversation. But want to be communications in business. It was only because I said something that immediately made the other person see we were talking about different things that suddenly we started making sense to each other.

Any communication expert who studies business communication will tell you that such things need to be handled very carefully to keep employees and team members fully engaged. There is little doubt that Contemporary Business Communication has been forever changed by the information age. Is it true that not everyone can be trusted with information? Many people would agree, some would go so far as to say that humans cannot be trusted with information, but why? Well, information is power and if you power-up those who cannot control their integrity levels or choose not to, then in a way giving them the information makes you an accessory to their actions.

This may increase the effective of cell phone type communication by a factor of three. When so much of communication is usually down to visual clues in a conversation when those visual clues are not available communication becomes much harder. Writing is a tool of communication; it is not simply a way of conveying a conversation. For instance, many folks have a lot of knowledge, experience, observations, insight and original thoughts.

But that’s not all this technology will do and there will be entrepreneurs and innovators bringing you new applications for these new fantastic business communication tools, as fast as they can think them up. There is a simple thing that can be done to improve any businesses communications and yet few businesses ever pay any attention to it. There will be light-speed Business and Administrative Communication around the globe using satellites and what we might perceive as infinite bandwidth. If it is true that experts are people who have made lots of mistakes then I am a super expert.

    What all these businesses have in common is that they are based on people communicating with each other. They are communications businesses. Communications businesses are very rarely, if ever, good places to advertise. However, they are really interesting and necessary products, and on the Web they may be the most interesting and necessary products. I can get health information on the Web from the Everyday Health Network, but I can also get it from many other venues in many other mediums. The freedom to express myself and communicate with others efficiently, privately, and in multiple formats is done far better on the Web than anywhere else. Social networks, and the other communications products of the Web, are the engines of that freedom.

    Tell me about it, Bruce… it's my curse… I can't forget anything I learned in elementary school. :-)

    As for continuing to read … it's a good question. I think I stopped reading Slate and Salon for a good 3.5 years after the 2000 election and completely after the 2004 election.

    What you guys have created is a unique communicator's take on communications and politics. It's hard to keep up a pure “communications” blog (i.e., less taking sides, only talking about how they're doing), but politics gives it some immediacy.

    I know it's challenging and fraught with potential conflict, but adding takes on businesses with communications issues to the latest political mess would keep me checking back … (and Hornseth can keep the history stuff comin', too).

    Good morning;

    Regarding D-Star and the CODEC for it: I thought that it was in the public domain, having been developed by the JARL Digital Committee and was then handed to Icom for use in their radios. It was also offered to the other Japanese radio manufacturers.

    There are many claims made for the capabilities of the D-Star System, but I have not yet seen any clear demonstrations of any significant advantage of D-Star over conventional voice FM. Speaking of conventional voice FM, the D-Star demonstrations I have heard have not been convincing of any superior voice quality. To me, the D-Star voice quality reminds me of some of the narrow band cellular telephone channels where I must ask for repeats to get the message to me. It is not always that clear.

    The data capabilities will not live up to the expectations of the data users they are courting, but that is due more to the users' expectations than any real deficiency in the data mode capability. The claims of “Internet like data capability” that I have heard from some proponents I think are coming from people who have never used 2 Meter 1200 Baud packet. At least the D-Star literature does say that the 128 Kb data rate is found only at 1.2 Gc and above.

    I do have some questions about the pricing of the D-Star equipment. Please note that I do have a 2 Meter D-Star equiped radio, but there are no 2 Meter D-Star repeaters that I can find in the Puget Sound Area. I have never used my own radio in Digital Voice Mode. Yes, I live in Icom-America's backyard, but we do not yet have much in the way of D-Star capability here. One of the main objections I hear is the pricing; the lowest cost D-Star radio for 2 Meters in the HRO catalog is $ 470; $ 330 for a 30 mm by 38 mm PCB addition to a $140 regular 2 Meter FM radio to make it also able to talk D-Star. That is over twice the price of the whole radio just for the PCB.

    Technical CODEC comparisons aside, if Icom-America is truly interested in developing D-Star in North America, someone in their marketing group needs to look at the numbers.

    Enjoy;

    @witnesstohistory, #33:

    You QUOTED Jim as saying

    “iii) to any telephone number assigned to a paging service, cellular telephone service, specialized mobile radio service, or other radio common carrier service, or any service for which the called party is charged for the call;”

    and then you made a snide comment about pay-per-call cell phones, but you failed to properly read the quote. Allow me to break it down for you in plain terminology:

    “…any telephone number assigned to a … CELLULAR TELEPHONE SERVICE … OR any service for which the called party is charged…”

    It was an either/or statement, not an inclusive one. Personally, I think my cell phone fits both of the qualifications, as I have to pay for airtime and any call I answer deducts from those minutes, thereby charging me, in effect.

    Either way, it specifically states cell phones, so your comment was both ignorant and unnecessary.

    With so much big talk built up around pre paid mobile service and the barrage of media interest and ads given to cellular telephone service providers like Reverse Phone and Phone Detective, choosing which plan to go with can be stunning. Pre paid cellular telephone service allows for pliability that you simply can’t get with normal cellphone providers. Pre paid cellular telephones do not need a contract.
