Laptop vs. Netbook Computer

January 14, 2010 by

The type of computers called netbooks, being as they are more or less new on the scene, have additional descriptions placed on them like mini laptop computers or simply ultraportables. The phrase notebook computer being synonymous with laptop.

Netbook computers, are pigeon-holed as being within the subnotebooks classification, that is a very fast – developing class of smaller, lightweight, lower price range laptop computers that’s designed for standard computing as well as the utilization of web-based applications (they are enabled to connect to the Internet wirelessly).

They’re offered more or less as supplementary devices that can add to a person’s regular computer resources. Additional descriptive references can include: small, light-weight, minimalist and cheap laptop computers; as well as smaller, less pricey laptop computers.

Announced during the lead up to the winter holiday shopping season of ’07 – as being smaller laptops optimized for low weight together with low price – netbook computers did not include the cd/dvd drive, settled with smaller screens and in the same way keyboards, and scaled back on specification and processing capacity.

In the years since then, the netbook’s display dimensions have varied from a little bit less than five inches to just slightly more than 10, with their weight in the 1 kilogram (2. 2 pounds) range.

By the summer months of 2009 netbooks had become more than a little bit more cost effective when compared with traditional laptops, to the almost unimaginable of having even been provided as being a free bonus in consideration of the commitment to an Internet service plan by AT&T in Atlanta, Georgia

During the short period in time since their release, computers known as netbooks have been increasing in dimensions as well as features, and in tandem netbooks are being made less in weight and smaller. Consequently, physical characteristics like how long and wide they are and what their weight is will not be what can tell them apart.

As it looks these days, perhaps a Netbook is able to be described to be a smallish, lower-powered notebook that lacks an optical disc drive(cd/dvd player/recorder). On the other hand that probably will not be for too long either, seeing as optical drives are being designed ever smaller and will soon be accommodated in a netbook. Add to that the rapid improvement of wireless connectivity in computers will make it so that external media like dvd’s and blu- ray disks can easily be done without.

So, for the time being, a netbook computer might best be labeled as a smaller, lower cost laptop computer devoid of an optical drive.

After reading the many posts on this site, I purchased the Sony PRS-600. I like it, but it is not great. The former post about wireless connectivity is definately on the mark. Sony did the right thing wrong, if they had included wireless connectivity this would be one hot reader. I like the functionality, easy to use, and intuitive. The keyboard is silly, and not practical to use. When you get to the “Text Memo” window, I (foolishly) expected to be able to write with the sylus, but the only way to enter text is with the keyboard that looks like they have combined the size of a Blackberry, and a regular keyboard into a mid-size mess. The “Handwriting” selection I like (it would have been better with horizontal lines to keep my writing at least a little neater, like the “Text Memo” window). But, it does work well, you can easily write, or draw anything with good results. Erasing is a no-brainer, simple and easy to do. My last comment is the pictures…why can't they be in color???…sheesh…the black and white pictures (grayscale) are detailed; however, unappealing at best.
That's it guys and gals….you may not agree, but overall, like the Sony…my only real complaint is that Sony should have gone the extra mile with wireless, and color would have been really, really nice. Oh, did I forget to mention there is no way to hear music without ear-buds? aaarrrrrrrrrgggggg!!!!

Amazing Articles!! Thanks a lot for putting this comprehensive “guide” (“tour”?) together. I've been fooling around with some distros myself lately, but didn't go as comprehensively as you did. (Not even close)

I wonder if you would be willing to do a folowup of this post on how each of the distros you left on your Hard Drive behaves on different things like Wireless connectivity, battery life and so on.

    Am I getting pushy? :)

Imrahil, I understand your concern. I encourage anyone who feels that way to

    a) not use readermini.com,

    b) use the demo account listed on the front page of readermini.com, or

    c) create a new gmail/google reader account for use with readermini.com.

The problem is that the Google Reader API only supports one authentication method. I have to ask for the username and password and send it to the google servers to get the token I need for access to the Google Reader API. That method is called AuthForInstalledApps.

There is another authentication system that OTHER google APIs support. “Account Authentication Proxy for Web-Based Applications” or AuthForWebApps. The GR team says this system will eventually be added to Google Reader's API, but the less preferable system is the only thing available now.

I find a cafe is great for many things – meeting friends, relaxing alone, reading, doing computer work in the sun w/ a cappuccino – I have even studied at cafes for years! But I think in Europe it is strange to bring a notebook computer to a cafe, maybe not a part of the culture?

I went to Italy once (to Arco) and I remember sitting at the cafes in the morning and night was one of the best things.

    Hi Joel,

I'm a product manager with Echo360. We are indeed looking at adding this support in future versions of Personal Capture. In the meantime, EchoSystem 3.0 has a feature called “External Media Ingest”. This feature allows you to upload screen recordings created with Camtasia into the EchoSystem. The EchoSystem will process these files, create the various outputs required and then automatically publish links to the LMS or other portals. The process is quite simple and very much like using Personal Capture.

    Hope this helps,
    Carl

Hi Jan, thanks, I forgot to mention sixgroups in 4 or 5, it was in fact another good tool available to attendees (I forgot to mention the tumblr site too). In my case, the reason I did not provide immediate feedback was that the wireless connectivity was poor in most rooms. Can we rate sessions or individual slides using sixgroups? Using hashtags in Twitter we can have a simple back channel, but it may not reflect what the whole audience thinks about a given session or parts of it.

According to a survey done by Google’s AdMob, games are the number one use of most tablet computers out there, including Apple’s own iPad and iPad 2. As you can see from the chart above, 84% of tablet owners play games on their devices, a use that’s apparently ahead of even email checking, search, or newsreading and social networking. That’s interesting — when the iPad was first introduced, Steve sat on a couch and read email and news, but it turns out that once you get these things in people’s hands, the number one thing they’re doing is playing games. Just like the iPhone, playing games are a big deal on these mobile devices, and they’re also a big way Apple has been able to sell both apps and hardware. Additionally, 38% of respondents say they use their tablets more than two hours a day, and 82% have been using their tablets at home. Anecdotally, I’ll guess that these are still supplementary devices, though — people are using their tablets while watching TV or otherwise engaging…

Cultural globalization is full of surprises and it can be difficult to predict how individual cultures will react to external media. But as well as bringing challenges to the design arena, it should be remembered that it also brings a whole wealth of ideas – creative input from across the globe that would never have made it into other cultures without mediums such as the internet.]]>
