Learning to Drive: Automatic or Manual Car?

January 31, 2009 by

When you wish to learn to drive, you have a choice of taking your driving lessons in a manual or automatic car.

If you do pass your driving test in an automatic vehicle though, you will need to bare in mind that you will not be able to drive a manual car with that licence (UK). If however, you pass your test in a manual car, you are entitled to drive an automatic car.

A manual car has gears and three foot operated pedals. You have to change up and down the gears yourself at the appropriate time.

An automatic car has an automatic gearbox that will change the gears for you and only two foot pedals (accelerator & brake). This makes learning in an automatic car a popular choice by those learners who find it difficult to co-ordinate the gears and clutch whilst driving a manual car. Older or disabled learner drivers often find an automatic vehicle easier also.

The vast majority of people tend to learn to drive in a manual car. As a result, there are far more driving instructors and driving schools who teach in manual cars than in automatic cars. It may be more difficult therefore to find a driving instructor or driving school that undertake automatic lessons. These lessons are often more expensive also.

In the early stages of driving, it may seem easier to not have to worry about gears and the clutch pedal but most people have few problems mastering them after a suitable number of hours training and practice. Given the extra variety of vehicles that you can drive after passing your driving test in a manual car, it does make sense to persevere with your manual driving lessons even if you end up driving an automatic car subsequently.

3 weeks to try and correct driving faults. NO WAY. She also needs to learn what the examiner is looking for and she needs to start practising NOW.
I do not think any instructor will take her on. If they do and she fails then it comes back to the instructor. He has an ADI number and it is on the badge in the car. Examiner will write this number down and it will be processed after the test. This could be bad for the instructor.
I suggest she cancels the test and push it for another month. She will not lose her fee if she does it now, 10 working days before test she cannot cancel. Next time tell her to get instruction before booking test.

    Let us know what happens

Tony is a fantastic driving instructor who is patient and relaxed, which is really helpful when you are first learning to drive. I had all my lessons with him, from when I first began to drive and I passed my test first time. I can honestly say that I think that this was entirely down to Tony's expertise. I would (and do) recommend him to anyone. Thanks Tony! :-)

It would be interesting to know if your driving instructor tells his/her students to drive more economically when learning – and if not why not?

Perhaps ask him next time your in a lesson – or ask whether its something they may consider teaching in the future.

I have been trying the tips myself when driving and do find it makes driving a lot easier and stressfree.. Tend not to get as many people driving too close too which is a bonus!

“that lecherous imbecile who taught me back home! ” … woah … i can partly understand how you must have felt back home. the driving-instructor there is least interested in what you learn … he just wants that lesson to be done with for the day. and the people in the other cars – they are always waiting for the slightest provocation to show their tune-making talents on their horns !anyway, all the best ! hope you progress from 'L' to 'Pakka' license very soon.

Until mine, I'd never ridden gaited horses before either. The difference between the two remind me of the difference between driving an automatic car vs. 4-on the floor sports car. Gaited would be the automatic – very smooth transitions from walk to run. Likewise from run to stop – very rough on quarter horses. No trotting on gaited horses, either. I like both, but as I get older I know I'll ride longer if I'm riding gaited horses. Haha, I won't hurt so much after a few hours riding, either, since I don't get to ride often enough anymore to stay in top shape for it.

I want my daughter to teach me how to ride English. But it seems all I'll be riding for now is bareback, since she also took the western saddle with her today.

It's true, the position of the Queen of England is definitely an anachronism in the 21st century. That's only because there hasn't been a “Queen of England” since 1707!!! The Act of Union merged the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland. It became the Kingdom of Great Britain, which after the 1801 Act, became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The Queen's British title is Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Thanks for the bump, probably worth another post if I can get time.

I think you are right, and your thought is naive about Scotland :)

I've read some of the the Counter Terrorism Act, and it extends to the United Kingdom, as per para 91, Extent:

    (b) any other provisions of this Act—

    (i) extend to the whole of the United Kingdom, and

(ii) do not extend to any country or territory outside the United Kingdom.

Come to think of it, might just go and have another serve of middle-class lefty noodles with asparagus, bok choi, capsicum, lemongrass, chilli, ginger, garlic, basil….Last night I cooked it for a small and select group consisting of a welder, a housepainter, a bush poet and a social worker who all vote green and/or sing in choirs. MIDDLE CLASS LEFTIES ARE EVERYWHERE! Even my driving instructor is one! Sorry, wrong thread.
