Munich: Beer, Bavarians and Business

October 2, 2009 by

Munich is packed with beautiful beer gardens, magnificent public green areas and buildings with ornate stucco facades. Tradition and modernism rub shoulders in Munich as in no other German city.

The small town charm of many Munich districts stands in great contrast with the hectic pace of big city life on the Marienplatz or along the sidewalks of Maximilian Street. Quite aside from the famed Oktoberfest held each autumn, this city on the Isar River offers visitors a wealth of architectural treasures. During the years of the last century, Munich has become one of Germany’s most important media and business centres. Munich’s unique combination of iPhones and lederhosen have made the city one of the most popular business and holiday destinations in Europe.

From Petersbergl to Munich.

Monks settled on the Isar in the eighth century, building Tegernsee Monastery at the place they called Petersbergl. The crypt of the church of St. Peter, Munich’s oldest, dates back to the early Middle Ages. In the twelfth century Heinrich the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, constructed the city of Munich around St. Peter’s. Under the command of this powerful duke, Munich became an important city. It was the official residence of the Bavarian dukes from 1255 and named the capital city of Bavaria in 1506.

A square for football celebrations.

Just as Munich is the heart of Bavaria, the Marienplatz is the heart of the city, the most popular and best known of the many squares in Munich. The new city hall is on the north side of the square, with the old city hall, the Rathaus, on its eastern side. St. Peter’s is just a few steps away. The famous and beloved Bayern Munchen football team has traditionally celebrated its championship titles on the Marienplatz with thousands of enthusiastic fans.

Munich conjures up images of Oktoberfest, the Hofbrauhaus, shady beer gardens and people wearing lederhosen and dirndl. All of these images are accurate, but Munich is more than simply a bastion of Bavarian traditions. The city is one of Germany’s most important publishing and television centres, for example. Many publishing houses, radio and television stations, film production companies and recording studios have their head office in the media city of Munich. As a result, Munich is home to more actors, artists, TV executives and stars than any other German city.

Summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs.

The celebrities of the past, the Bavarian dukes, princes and kings, also resided in Munich. Their legacy has left the city with a number of fascinating historical attractions. There are so many to choose from, visitors may have a hard time deciding which of the many sights to head for first.

Nymphenburg Palace and its park should be near the top of the list. The former summer residence of the Bavarian rulers, Schloss Nymphenburg is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bavaria today. Its elaborate interior furnishings, including King Ludwig I’s almost surreally ornate “Gallery of Beauties” should not be missed.

Symbol of Munich.

The twin towers of Munich’s most famous symbol, the Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Lady), are 99 metres tall. Duke Sigismund laid the cornerstone of Munich’s most beloved church on 9 February 1468. Today the Frauenkirche is officially the Cathedral Church of the Archbishops of Munich and Freisling. Its towers can be seen for miles around, is in part because the city administration prohibits the construction of any building within Munich’s central ring taller than 99 metres. New construction of taller buildings further away from the centre has been permitted in the past, but is currently under review. Only the south tower of the Frauenkirche can be climbed. It offers a unique view of Munich, its surroundings, and the nearby Alps, which on clear days appear to be close enough to touch.

“As well as becoming more frequent, eruptions seem to get more intense during the high-activity phases. A number of Iceland’s most devastating eruptions – including that of the volcano Laki in 1783 that killed over half of Iceland’s livestock and led to a famine that wiped out about a quarter of the human population – have occurred when the Atlantic rift system has been active. “If we are entering a more active phase, these bigger eruptions will become more likely,” says Thordarson.

Judging by recent volcanic and earthquake activity, Thordarson and his colleagues believe that Iceland is entering its next active phase and estimate it will last for 60 years or so, peaking between 2030 and 2040.”

Do you already have a US teaching license? If so first try the German-American or English-language schools in the area. If not, it´s impossible!

Likely not — more likely he is simply a poorly bred example of his breed. I have seen fifty pound Yorkies – purebred but that doesn't mean anything if the people doing the breedings are not knowledgable and responsible and are just making puppies to sell to whoever comes along and impulsively buys from them.

Just love him for being your dog and alter him so he doesn't have an 'accident' that will just allow more poorly bred dogs into this overpupulated world.

Grafenwoehr is pretty remote in Eastern Bavaria and interesting only to hiking buffs. On the other hand you are close to the Czech border and not too far from Pilzen and Budweis, where you could taste some REAL beer instead of the rice brew they sell you as such in the US.LOL.
There is the possibility to travel by rail(be prepared to change trains often) and from Nürnberg or Munich you can fly to anywhere in the world.

    Yep, amazing!

And Michael Phelps, he is not from planet Earth!! Even he admitted that himself!!

But whether it is Phelps or Bolt, they appeared to be enjoying themselves. I think the Japanese athletes tried too hard. Don't know about the Chinese because the Japanese media focussed mainly on their own.

Two of their three women marathon runners had to retire, one before the event and one half way. The woman who was least expected to make a difference for Japan came in 13th place, but I thought she made a decent finish and deserve some attention, at least from the Japanese media.

The city of Beijing as presented on the marathon route appeared very clean and decent with lots of green. Where is the smog or the pollution the world was talking about??
I thought Causeway Bay in HK was worse (sorry xy2!!).

[...] It is, according to the International Herald Tribune and Monocle magazine. “A winning combination of investment in infrastructure, high-quality housing, low crime, liberal politics, strong media and general feeling of Gemütlichkeit make it a city that should inspire others.” Why do I mention this (other than liking Munich quite a lot myself)? “Work-life balance seems to be the city’s mantra. Make no mistake, people in this city work hard. With some of the highest apartment rents in Europe and all the shiny BMWs on the streets, they have to,” says William Boston, who wrote this article. “After work, Munich’s masses enjoy the city’s chill factor. The options are many, whether it’s drinking beer in the English Garden or in the shade of the tall trees at Viktualienmarkt, sunbathing on the banks of the Isar river, attending the theater or concerts, or hanging out in the smart bars around Gärtnerplatz or entertaining at home.” Sounds good to me. Adam – Just dropped by for a brief visit and am reading about the awful fires! Glad to hear you are leaving the area to cover something else. How was your asthma? I sure hope the west coast starts getting a little rain to help with those fires.

Florida has finally jumped in (head first) to our summer afternoon thunderstorm patterns. Wow, great lightening shows in the evenings too.

Was back out at the beach yesterday and the marshes have already started to replenish themselves. Did not smell any dead fish as we passed through on our way to the beach!

April 29 – The Cathedral Church of St. Johns – 9 am

    Check out their web site
    Followed by brunch, location TBA.

    May 6 – God's House – time TBA

May 12 – Adat Yeshua Messianic Synogogue – 10:30 am
    (Saturday morning)
    At Jefferson and Lomas

Brunch on Sunday 11 am, location TBA

    May 19 – Congregation B'nai Israel – 9 am
    4401 Indian School

The next weekend is Memorial Day. We may choose some more traditions to visit after that date, but will leave it open for now. At any rate, I would like for us to use our three brunch meetings to set up a regular schedule for community fellowship and service, which I hope to begin in June.

For a detailed, maintained photographic timeline of the Media City : UK (MC:UK) Salford Quays development site, do a search on 'media city uk salford quays q3' in Google. Actual visible development started in June and the first full sized crane went up yesterday. Judging by the pace of the development and the fact that aspects of the first building (3-4 storeys) are already in place, the pace of construction is quite impressive to complete by 2010/11.

The argument that the 9 Lessons and Carols is somehow Catholic enough because it is a derivative of matins is a bit like saying the Church of England's “Eucharist” is Catholic enough because it's derived from Holy Mass.C'mon, Sentire, your ususal clarity of analysis is failing here. The real point is being missed repeatedly and, may be even, deliberately: WHY RELY ON AN INFERIOR DERIVATIVE WHEN WE CAN HAVE THE REAL THING? No one minds a few carols before or after, but it ain't Catholic Liturgy. Get it?By the way, the reaction to Anon's comment seems to betray a curious ambivalence (maybe even antipathy) on this site to all things “Extraordinary Form”. Whilst Sentire tolerates things old rite, they are far from welcomed, embraced and PROMOTED. This is worrying. Is it emblematic of the wider absence of progress in the Archdiocese of Melbourne on these issues? The lack of any real exposure for the Extraordiary Form at the Cathedral Church of Melbourne, for instance, is a continuously curious oddity that is not failing to go unnoticed or remedied. Semi-official replies rely on the curious logic that many many things must be done but nothing must be done for the first time. We pray for the passing from authority of these dinosaurs, so the rest of us can worship as Holy Mother Church both allows and encourages. Although, as usual, the “Australian church” seems to have increasingly less to do with Rome than one might expect.

David ~ that's very interesting and I had no idea what it was even to be called. It is a very subtle message isn't it?? As you rightly say, not many people would even realise the significance ~ I suppose they are so taken up [and I think they're justified in feeling this way given the enormity of the situation] with the bare facts of a Muslim Mosque close to Ground Zero and it must be almost impossible to see past that. Very difficult for those badly affected by the atrocity most especially.

Thank you for sharing that ~ Sharon xx ]]>
