Doctors have a union. It's called the AMA – it's just that we aren't a bunch of whingers. In my opinion the AMA is what a union should look like – it stands up for its members and advocates for better working conditions, but it does it at multiple levels and in more appropriate ways than striking. And the chief end isn't that doctors get lunch breaks (although that is one of their ends), it is that health care of Australia improves over all. Better working conditions for doctors is part of that (I know you wouldn't want me as your doctor if I've been working 15 hours straight).
As for nurses, I actually completely disagree. Nurses do a fantastic job and I wouldn't degrade their job for a second – it is hard. But when you consider that their course is 3 years shorter (or 5 if you do post-grad) meaning that they have 3 years more income and 3 years less HECS (a difference of close to $200, 000) plus the aforementioned great working conditions, and the fact that a nurse who entered uni at the same time as me is now earning about $5, 000 p.a. more than me, I have to work for quite a long time to make up that deficit, all the while having more responsibility in our day-to-day job (which brings with it the added costs of indemnity insurance).
Yes, nurses have to clean up poo and shower old people. And their job is hard, they are busy and they mostly work like troopers. I respect them as colleagues with an area of expertise that I know nothing about. But at the end of the day, when all is said and done, their working conditions are fantastic.
As for “Reward,” Webster's defines it as “Recompense,” that is, to return in kind, synonym “To Pay.” We can argue semantics if you like, but I think you understand my point.
Re teachers – I won't comment because I don't profess to know what their conditions are like, except to say that I wouldn't agree with a strike unless the circumstances are extraordinary. Which I don't think they ever have been.

I'm feeling a little more hopeful about getting real reform now that the Max Baucus bill has managed to alienate both Republicans and Democrats. If it goes down in flames, that might strengthen the position of the progressives in the House.
Really, there are so many good “conservative” arguments for health care reform that it ought to already be a done deal. Many employers support it because they hope for cost controls. Potential entrepreneurs need it because the price of individual insurance is so high as to prevent them from striking out on their own. Small businesses need it because they're now at a major competitive disadvantage in negotiating fees and premiums, and they're too often faced with a stark choice between assuming costs that will make them uncompetitive or cancelling their employees' insurance.
Ultimately health insurance ought to be decoupled from employment. Obsidian Wings just had an intelligent post on this aspect of the issue.
