Purchasing Discount Laptops as Alternatives to Desktops

August 31, 2009 by

These days, it is often more useful to purchase a laptop than buying desktop pc’s. Not so long ago, desktops would be the computer of choice for several reasons, such as larger screen sizes, cheaper when comparing similar spec machines, and so-on. However, more recently laptops have certainly increased in popularity because price has been driven down by the huge number of manufacturers and advances in technology.

Another big attraction to laptops is that they can be taken wherever you go. Rather than having to sit at the office desk, users can surf the internet or work in front of the TV, on the train, or when on vacation. Simply connect to one of the wireless router appliances in order to get good internet coverage, and stay online whenever you need to use it. There’s really no need to sit in an uncomfortable office with a laptop computer.

Many of the best laptop pcs around, although sometimes pricey, do have some excellent features to take advantage of. Blu-Ray DVD players, built-in webcams, fingerprint readers, top quality graphics chips and speedy CPUs are just a few of these. One brand that has certainly become very popular for their range of notebooks are Apple Mac laptops as they are really stylish in design, but also have great build quality and top performance.

There are also plenty of cheap lap tops on sale that are more than good enough if you want to surf the internet, or do work in Excel or Word. The main costs of laptops come with the speed of the graphics chip and the processor, which are mainly concerns that gamers or media professionals need to consider.

Student laptops are some of the cheapest priced computers, purely for the reason that they only need to use basic applications to do their work, but also don’t have have a lot of money to be spending on the latest and greatest computers. Searching online can be a great place to buy such laptops because there is such a wide choice, and so many retailers selling computers. If you spend a bit of time looking around, you may even find refurbished notebooks which can often be a good choice.

Refurbished notebooks are basically like a brand new laptop, but cost a fraction of what they would when bought brand new. Although you might mainly find laptop models of a few months or years old available as refurbished, they can easily be good enough for what most of us need a computer for.

Here we go again on the life, death and rebirth of Intel’s Larrabee graphics chips. Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive of DreamWorks Animation, let slip today that Intel is going to deliver a new workstation-based chip in the future that goes by the name “Larrabee.” He said so in an interview on stage at the D8 conference. That’s a little odd, since Intel announced that it had canceled Larrabee. But it appears that Katzenberg is only partially off. The graphics chip known under the code name Larrabee has indeed been canceled. Intel confirmed that in a post last week which repeated what it had said in December: Larrabee is no more. But, in our own words, the son of Larrabee lives on. Intel showed a new chip dubbed Knights Corner, a server and workstation chip that has more than 50 processing cores. Using that chip, Intel said it is shipping development kits code-named Knights Ferry. That is what Katzenberg is referring to, says Intel spokesman Nick Knupffer. Knights Corner has the…

One thing not mentioned is source code cleanup of some really basic applications….

If you ever run strace on a linux applicaiton, you'll be amazed at how much resource is spent on multiple searches for libraries and data as the test application loads. This in and of itself is a REAL performance killer….

As for bootup time… We've got to begin a serious move to linuxBIOS. That would be a real performance enhancer…

Also, a way to cache the “stuff” for boot time, LIKE WINDOWS XP DOES, to help cut boot time thrashing would help alot too.

    Cheers…

Just a heads up. Tomorrow I will be at the doctors (who knows whom I will meet). Then I have to meet a graduate student from the UK. Then I hope to get a CD of Sunday's Brass Tacks and review that–internet coverage was lousy, so I did not bother to strain my ears.

Then I will play tennis either late afternoon (with two retired guys from CDB, plus up to three others who drop in occasionally) or evening with the man from LIME again (he used to live here so maybe knows a thing or two about local affairs). I really have no clue what we will discuss during the day, but if you want to know I will bear that in mind.

Now, I'm off to bed, and thinking about whether financial markets are carving out a new bottom or will fall further.

Casper is beige on his underbelly, and Mary Lynn said Missy is more a silver color in one of her comments. But boy, do they have matching markings when they are laying down. Like I said before, Missy laying on the laptop computer looks just like Casper. Sorry I hadn't posted before. I didn't know Mary Lynn was putting this big boy on her web site.

The EeePC has a fairly capable onboard intel 3D graphics chip. It can run compiz quite well. I expect the 3d transitions will be smoother than the 2d transitions are. The snapshot binary didn't work for me so I am attempting to do my own build. It takes a lot of room (more than 3gig) and a lot of processor time and there are an astonishing number of dependencies. I think it will get there in the end, but I have had to abandon building on the EeePC.

I agree that this was a crazy story. Only two months to election day, and the media is making headlines about whether or not Obama meant to refer to Sarah Palin when he used the “p” word. Of course, she had made that crack about lipstick making her, a hockey mom, only a little different from a pit bull. I think your blog needs to give us that context, so we understand why there was so much fuss. As for the difference between TV and internet coverage of these remarks, do you think TV made more, or less of a trivial event than the internet? I suspect the blogosphere is still buzzing about it, while TV is moving on. Maybe that's a point in TV's favor.

I’d look at Toshibas (my wife’s newish notebook), Acer’s lines (Acer and Gateway both)…but mostly I’d go to stores and try out keyboards and displays until I found one that worked for me (what we did for her). The webcam’s pretty much ubiquitous and even a $225 netbook can do fine surfing the web; WoW may be more of an issue.

this? “Terrorists could possibly detonate the homemade liquid explosives without the need for a blasting cap by introducing a simple electric circuit, employing a 9-volt battery or the battery pack from a laptop computer.”That's a bit different from what I'm describing (and what, I assume, you experienced): my batteries spontaneously exploded, all by themselves. this review the T41p has exceptionally strong graphics for a laptop.

I'd be quite surprised if it wasn't just a matter of plugging the big screen in to the dock and resetting the resolution (you can even get utilities to do the last automatically) – I don't think you'd need any hardware at all.]]>
