The Newest Addition to the Aquamog Family is the Aquamog CCX-238

April 27, 2009 by · 32 Comments

The Aquamog was first manufactured in the early 1980′s by Aquatics Unlimited (AU). The McNabb family founded AU in 1975.

Both Tom and Dave McNabb developed the Aquamog brand and line of machinery throughout the 1980s and 1990s while with AU. Tom continued the Aquamog product line into the new century with the addition of the MarshMog. Tom’s new company Clean Lakes, Inc. located in Martinez, California and Dave’s company DK Environmental in

Lafayette, California have been working together on the aquamog project for about 10 years and in Feb 2009 the Aquamog CCX was introduced into the Aquamog family.

The vessel know by many as the swamp cutter; swamp rig; cookie cutter; tule cutter; various other nicknames was in “no name land” so to speak. It did not fit the mold of conventional aquamogs as being a multi-purpose aquatic maintenance machine. But is has now worked its way into the aqua-mog group of machines.

With 10 years of testing and rigorous test Tom and Dave thought that the machine with out a name had finally proven itself as a true Aquamog. The Aquamog CCX had meet all the critical tests to become an Aquamog. The Aquamog CCX-238 has now completed all the tests and is ready to stand side by side with the rest of the Aquamogs.

What makes the Aquamog CCX special is its ability to access areas that cannot be reached by the MarshMog or the Aquamog PRX and Aquamog SRX-109. In addition it has been found that the Aquamog CCX system of removing aquatic emergent vegetation such as cattails and bulrush can be performed in a fraction of the time and more efficiently than with the other aquamogs. This equates to a less more spent by clients and users of the machines.

As with the other Aquamogs the McNabb’s have a unique way of naming the aquamogs after their best attributes. The Aquamog CCX-238 is no different. The Aquamog CCX-238 gets its name from the 238 horse-power Detroit engine that it has rocking under the back hood. The CCX stands for “Cookie Cutter eXtraordinaire”. The “Cookie Cutter” part of the name was picked due to its ability to cut channels through any type of aquatic emergent weed with easy, just like a cookie cutter through dough.

The following is a list of some of the other aquamog names and how they where derived.

Aquaomg PRX-163 – 163 H.P. and PRX stands for “Power Rig eXtraordinaire”

Aquamog SRX-109 – 109 Horse Power and SRX represents for “Small Rig eXtraordinaire”

HarborMog HRX-109 109 Horse Power and HRX represents for “Harbor Rig eXtraordinaire”

Aquamog WRX-225 225 H.P. and WRX means for “Walking Rig eXtraordinaire”

So you see it was only fitting to give the Aquamog CCX-238 is proper name. All of the Aquamogs that where made by the McNabb’s will be written about over the next few months in a series at www.aquamogs.com. Please check those sites for additional information on the other Aquamogs and projects that they have done all over the world.

Add Some Diversity to Your Summer Travel

March 31, 2009 by · 28 Comments

I’d like to make a suggestion for a vacation destination where you can find a great deal of variety in the type of local attractions offered.  Everybody has different goals for their summer travel.  Some of us want to visit Disneyland and some just want to relax on the beach.  Others love to see historical sites and still others love to play golf.

Summer California actually offers activities in all of these categories.  There are many golf courses between the Pacific Ocean and Palm Desert.  And, of course, you’ll find plenty of beach action for sun worshipping.

Another obvious destination is the Disneyland Resort, which includes Downtown Disney and Disney’s California Adventure (by the way, Disney is spending like a billion dollars on a major renovation of California Adventure over the next several years).

If you haven’t been to Anaheim in several years, you’ll be amazed at the changes.  California Adventure exhibits the diversity of California culture, from citrus orchards to downtown Los Angeles to the northern California Wine Country.  You will observe an international blend of cultures in the visitors at the parks and at Downtown Disney.  It is a great place for people watching—a veritable cultural melting pot.

Speaking of a cultural melting pot, Southern California is a concoction of people and cultures from around the world.  There is a particularly strong presence from Pacific Rim countries, but Europe, Asia and Africa are likewise well represented (not so many folks from Antarctica).

You’ll find quite a number of ethnic communities scattered throughout Southern California, and worth a visit in your summer travel activities.  The first community that comes to mind is Chinatown, just north of the Los Angeles central business district.  Just to the east of downtown is Little Tokyo.  Koreatown lies on the west side of the 110 Freeway.

Take time out of your schedule to drive down to Orange County to visit downtown Santa Ana, portions of which will remind you of a medium-sized city in Mexico.  Nearby Little Saigon offers shopping and dining with a Vietnamese and Southeast Asia influence.  There are no-doubt many other ethnic area in the Southern California melting pot.

Spruce up your house without spending a fortune

This global economy problem has a tendency to get me in a real funk. Everytime I turn on the news or go to a news website all I see is talk about people losing their jobs, everyone out of money, no one spending anything, businesses going under, it’s horrifying and scary. I live in one of those lucky states where the recession hasn’t nailed us like it has in California and Michigan, but if this goes on too long I’ll start to see some of the major downfalls here, too. I’ve seen local businesses close and it’s sad. I worry about those who are still going and wonder how long they can make it.

In these depressing times we may be forgoing the little things that give us a pick me up when we need it most. Whether it’s getting our hair done, a facial, or even just rearranging our furniture. Some people are in such dire straights they don’t dare do anything. But what about those who are needing to do something in order to sell a house or move on to the next stage of their life?

If you’re trying to see a house, you’ll likely see depressed home prices (and depressed sellers) but you can help to speed along the sale by doing a few touchups to the inside and outside. This gains curb appeal and gives they potential buyer some eye candy. So what can you do for super cheap?

For the inside you can cover stained furniture with chair slipcovers, and get new ceramic cabinet knobs in the kitchen, bathroom or laundry room. There are tons of little ways you can fix things up.

For the exterior you should keep the yard mowed, do some painting touchups, if you have some money you could consider installing vinyl siding. Don’t forget about flowers, a neatly trimmed yard, even something simple like replacing a beat up mailbox with a shiny new one.

Glasspar Boats Company History

February 3, 2009 by · 30 Comments

There is actually quite a bit of history that surrounds the classic boat company named Glasspar. Bill Tritt, the founder of the company, began building smaller sized fiberglass boats in his factory in Santa Ana, CA in 1949. Bill Tritt was very dedicated to his boat business, and was stunning the world with his use of fiberglass in the construction of his boats as time passed. He closely studied marine architecture and the art of building boats. His fiberglass boats were sometimes referred to as “plastic boats,” but he knew that fiberglass was the wave of the future. In fact, by the 1950s, Glasspar was manufacturing about fifteen to twenty percent of all the fiberglass boats that were being manufactured and sold in the United States.

Bill Tritt had developed multiple sizes and different styles of boats for all different preferences for his customers. One of the most noted boats that he created was known as the Glasspar G3. This particular boat is probably the most famous of his designs. The Glasspar G3 was named after the G3 missile, because the boat itself looks like a missile when on the water. The G3 ski boat was manufactured from the early 1960s up until the mid 1970s. When Glasspar was sold to Larson boats in the early 1970s, Larson continued to manufacture Glasspar G3 for sale because of their popularity.

The Glasspar G3 boat is actually going to make a rebirth! The boat has not been manufactured new since about 1974. FiberClassic Boat Manufacturing has created a newer version of the G3 ski boat and is bringing it to the marketplace very soon. Go to http://www.G3Skiboat.com for more information on this unique project with one of the most classic boats ever created!

Described by a leading travel writer as “one of the splendid small inns in the nation,” The Inn at Saratoga has become the preferred place to stay for discriminating business and leisure travelers worldwide.

Situated in picturesque and historic Saratoga Village, the Inn’s guest rooms overlook serene Saratoga Creek and Wildwood Park. The Santa Cruz Mountains provide a majestic backdrop to this tranquil setting.

Business travelers have found that the Inn at Saratoga’s convenient location combines proximity to Silicon Valley destinations with the ambience of a world apart from the ordinary.

The Inn’s setting is ideal for small offsite meetings, while Saratoga’s “Restaurant Row” offers a splendid array of choices for entertaining clients and colleagues or relaxing with friends. During the summer, the Inn’s proximity to the music series at both Paul Masson and Villa Montalvo has made it the preferred hotel for discriminating concert goers. The abundance of wedding and reception venues in the greater Saratoga area have also contributed to the Inn’s popularity with newlyweds and their guests.

Among Silicon Valley Hotels, there is no equal to the Inn at Saratoga.

Whether you come for business or pleasure, you’re surrounded by a village rich in culture and history. Saratoga offers a tantalizing mixture of boutiques, quaint shops, fine art and antique galleries, and many of the Bay Area’s finest restaurants.

Are Fire Safety and Energy Conservation Related Concerns?

January 17, 2009 by · 36 Comments

If there’s anything we’ve learned in recent months, it is that we should be energy smart whenever possible.  Conserving energy in our homes and driving is very worthwhile.  Even though oil prices have come down to half of their peak in mid-2008, we know that they could go up again in a hurry.

I drive a large Yukon XL, which is basically a Suburban.  Mileage is not so good, but I’ve cut back to making three trips to the office weekly whenever possible.  That has helped my fuel budget.  I would get a smaller car, but this baby is pretty useful for carrying loads and large groups of people on a trip.

Several years ago we put in extra insulation in our home, and we use a whole house fan to reduce the amount of air conditioning we use.  When we hear so much energy talk on the news, it does have the effect of getting us to at least think about ways to cut back on energy usage.

Talk about a waste of energy—the fuel spent on airplanes, helicopters and trucks in fighting wildfires in California is insane.  Also, think about all the gasoline used by folks vacating their threatened homes.  I found some discussion about wildfire prevention and other fire safety issues at the Minutemanfire site.  It is amazing that homes could be destroyed even with tile roofs and a swath where the vegetation had been removed.

There’s a lot of wasted energy in the work involved in rebuilding homes demolished by wildfires.  So there is a relationship between energy conservation and fire prevention, that we often don’t think much about.
