A Brief History of the Cavaliers Hat

November 10, 2009 by · 27 Comments

Tricorn hats, also called Cavaliers hat, is a style of hat that was popular during the late 17th century and 18th century, falling out of style shortly before the French Revolution. At the peak of its popularity, the Tricorn hat was worn as civilian dress and as part of military and naval uniforms. Its distinguishing characteristic was a practical one, the turned up portions of the brim formed gutters that directed rainwater away from the wearers face, depositing most of it over his shoulders. Before the invention of specialized rain gear, this was a distinct advantage.

The black colored Cavaliers hat has a rather broad brim, pinned up on either side of the head and at the back, producing a triangular shape. The hat was typically worn with the point facing forward, though it was not at all unusual for soldiers, who would often rest a rifle or musket on their left shoulder, to wear the Tricorn hat pointed to the left to allow better clearance. The crown is low, unlike the steeple hats worn by the Puritans or the top hat of the nineteenth century.

Cavaliers hats ranged from the very simple and cheap to the extravagant, occasionally incorporating gold or silver lace trimming and feathers. In addition, military and naval versions usually bore a cockade or other national emblem at the front. The Tricorne hat later evolved into the bicorne and eventually the cocked hat.

Tricorne hats survive today as part of the traditional dress of the Chelsea Pensioners, the Guardia Civil and the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps of the United States Army.

A black feathered Cavalier hat is worn by the Lord Mayor of the City of London for all ceremonials and is in evidence at the annual Lord Mayors Show in November, when the newly elected Lord Mayor enthusiastically waves it at the crowds.

In the United States, the Cavaliers hat is associated with the American Revolution and American Patriots of that era, especially Minutemen Participants in reenactment events often don Cavaliers hats, and they also can be seen in sports culture as worn by fans of teams with Revolutionary names, such as the New England Patriots, the New England Revolution, the United States mens national soccer team, the University of Massachusetts and the George Washington University.

In France, synagogue officiants wear the Cavalier hat on formal occasions.

Stanmore Property Boom – The reasons why

October 10, 2009 by · 39 Comments

Stanmore in Middlesex is growing in popularity by the month, despite the downturn in the current economic situation. Stanmore property prices have dropped very little, and there is clearly a greater demand than there is supply. What are the attractions of this suburb on the outskirts of London?

Firstly the area is ideal for bringing up a family, with quiet streets and great access to some of the best schools in the borough of Harrow. The transport links are excellent, and you can be in the city within 45mins, using either of the two Jubilee line stations at Canons Park or Stanmore. Bus links, service all the surrounding areas, and frequency and range of options are huge.

If you like to shop, you can access the huge nearby shopping complexes of Watford, Harrow or Brent Cross. All are within 40 minutes by public transport or within 20 minutes on the outside by private car or taxi. All of these shopping complexes offer a range of modern outlets combined with access to diverse cuisine to accommodate every palate.

If you’ve got primary school aged children, you won’t find better schools than Stanburn and Whitchurch first and middle. Both are high performing schools with a great community spirit. Parental involvement and support is strong and both schools organise a range of events for the local community. The results and Ofsted inspections speak volumes about the ethos of both schools, and generally explain why you’re likely to pay a premium on your Stanmore house purchase (or rent) if you’re in the catchment area for either school.

If your children are older and senior schools are of more interest, than take a look at Park High. With a new head-teacher at the helm, of an already high-performing school, the prospects for Park High look very promising. If access to private schools is part of your requirement, you’ll find North London Collegiate (girls schools), which has a national reputation, literally on your doorstep. Access to a heap of other private and Grammar schools is achieved by a series of school provided private transportation companies that have a number of pick-ups in the area.

Whether you’re looking to buy or rent in Stanmore, you’re unlikely to be disappointed with the area, amenities or access to the city and beyond. With a range of modern new-build housing, and old-style 1930s Laing homes, with price ranges that start at £150,000 and go upwards of £1.5million, every taste is accommodated. Houses or flats in Stanmore are both a great in terms of location but also in terms of future investment. Find out more at www.stanmoreproperty.com.

Standard cover

This level of cover starts from around £25 and comprehensive cover can be in up to £220.  It’s great if you need it for breakdowns and to get you home when ever you breakdown in the UK.  With any UK breakdown cover company, they will tow you up to 20 miles or so, so if you should breakdown in London and you stay somewhere in Scotland, the breakdown company will take you to the nearest garage for your car to be repaired.  For £25 standard breakdown cover is well worth it, as one breakdown could cost you over £200 with another private breakdown company.

Comprehensive breakdown cover

This level of cover basically does what it says on the tin, if you breakdown, your put up in a hotel if you cannot get home or a replacement will be giving to you if one is available, usually large breakdown companies have plenty of cars available, so not to worry.  Comprehensive cover gives you really great piece of mind, this kind of cover also ensures vehicle parts and labour costs through an approved garage of course and will cost you what so ever.  Only the AA provides this kind of cover (parts cover) because they have the volume of customers to be able to afford to repair your car.

European breakdown cover

If you travel to Europe you can take out European breakdown recovery with any of the large breakdown companies, have a look at a comparison site as they will advise you on which company can assist you with European assistance for your short and long breaks abroad.  Many people don’t even consider taking this level of cover on but I can assure you it may happen even with a brand-new car so take the cover because it is cheap enough and it will save you in hundreds of another company and our country, who knows what other companies abroad will charge.

English History 1660 to 1760

July 11, 2009 by · 29 Comments

Charles II had a liking to have many mistresses, this resulted in his many illegitimate children, and a lot of these received dukedoms which have survivors till today.

Soon two of the worst disasters struck England, first the plague of 1665 and then the greatest fire of London in the next year.

After these happenings, as Charles had no legitimate heir his Catholic brother James II succeeded him in 1685. Even James rule also proved to be a bad one for England by suspending anti Catholic Laws and arresting the Bishops and eventually his second wife gave him his successor.

Anne protestant daughter of James II got the throne in 1702. The best thing happening in that era was her childhood friend Sarah marrying John Churchill, a brilliant general who led the English army on to the French and capturing 600 miles across Europe. The battle of Blenheim in 1704 ended French dominance in Europe.

Churchill was paid handsomely for this by becoming the Duke of Marlborough and Blenheim Palace was also awarded to him. A few years later Anne and Sarah had a fight with each other diminishing their influence on stately affairs.

Many people were supposed to have the throne but all being Catholics were sidelined and the throne went to George I, a German who knew nothing about speaking in English –not even a word but was a Protestant. So started a rule of the House of Hanover, under which Britain gained peace with wealth in the next century. George was immediately challenged by James II’s son “James the Pretender, reaching Scotland and to claim England’s throne, but was pushed back and ran to exile in France.

The Party Wall Act (Continued)

April 8, 2009 by · 4 Comments

If agreement cannot be reached between neighbouring parties, the process is as follows: A Surveyor or Surveyors is/are appointed to determine a fair and impartial Award, either: An ‘Agreed Surveyor’ (someone acceptable to all parties), or two surveyors representing both property owners.

The two surveyors will nominate a third surveyor who would be called in only if the two surveyors cannot agree.  In all cases, surveyors appointed under the dispute resolution procedure of the Party Wall Act to draw up an award must behave impartially and consider the interests of both neighbours.

The surveyor (or surveyors) will prepare an “award” (also known as a “party wall award”).  This is a document which: sets out the work that will be carried out, says when and how the work is to be carried out (for example, not at weekends if the buildings are domestic properties), records the condition of next door before the work begins (so that any damage can be properly attributed and made good), allows access for the surveyors to inspect the works while they are going on (to see that they are in accordance with the award).

The surveyor (or surveyors) will decide who pays the fees for drawing up the award and for checking that the work has been carried out in accordance with the award.

The owner undertaking the construction is made legally responsible for putting right any damage caused by carrying out the works, even if the damage is caused by his contractor.

Although minor works on a party wall are usually considered to be too trivial to come under the remit of the Act, the key point to be considered is whether any planned work will have consequences for the structural strength and support functions of the party wall.
