Social Media Marketing Sees Exponential Growth

Social media site growth has been amazing since this philosophy for the web initially showed up on the radar screen and appeared on the scene in 2005.

Sites like YouTube which sold for $1.5 billion to Google, Digg which is reportedly looking to sell for between 40 and $50 million, Twitter, MySpace, Facebook which received around $300 million in funding from Microsoft, Ning, Stumbleupon, Propeller, Mixx, DailyMotion, Odeo, and various others have all built tribal and rabid community followings.

These sites and this overall philosophy of websites have been titled Web 2.0.

Unfortunately, many businessmen and even many venture capital investors and entrepreneurs are questioning the business models of these various Web 2.0 websites and social networking sites.

The question is becoming, “where is the money at?”

And it’s a viable question to solve in order for social media and its Web 2.0 peers to continue to experience this explosive account growth.

Profitable and sustainable business models have to be attained for each various site without destroying their rabid early adopters and avid users.  You don’t want to piss off the natives or your site dies.

Of course, on the the negative side of business operations you have bandwidth, hosting, infrastructure, employees and other hard overhead costs which have to be paid out regardless at the very least before the company reaches profitability in order for your site to survive.

These challenges are creating various creative solutions.

Facebook in particular debuted a very controversial program called Beacon which gave advertisers access to much of their account holders data which allowed the advertisers better targeting and ROI.

Beacon had to be discontinued because of user outcry over privacy issues.

But the issue of how to profit with social media marketing and these various tribal user bases in the social media space is still very relevant.

It’s hard to say where this is headed and whether we’re on the cusp of Web 3.0 in the near future.

One thing is definitely certain in the hyper evolving world of the Internet. Social networking sites and Web 2.0 is even more supercharged and hyperfast evolving than the overall web in general.

Learning the communication style for how to grow your business using these already pre-existing tribes on various sites is crucial.

Each site seems to have its own etiquette and acceptable modes of practice for communicating with those members of that tribe.

One thing about these web 2.0 sites is if you come in as a blatant marketer or with overt advertising you’re going to lose, damage your business reputation, and even get flamed and called a spammer…a death sentence on the Internet.

So just get to know one site which you like and start participating there.  Take it slow over 30 days to see how the community members correspond and communicate with one another.

Once you have the basic manners down you can start to interlace some subtle hints and links to your website in your communications.  You want this to be unitrusive or even having a whiff of spam and an extension of the accepted communication modes within that site and tribe.

This may seem like it’s going to take a great time investment but the benefits of doing a small amount of research up front will pay you massive dividends.

And of course if you screw up this part all the time you put into these efforts will be completely wasted and worthless.

Get your start on a site with an already pre-existing massive audience like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace or Digg and have a go around there.  Contribute a whole bunch in discussions and with community members and you will begin to have the payoff.

Just make sure you have your goals in mind at the start of what and you want to accomplish and guide your activities where you’re spending your time in order to accomplish those goals.

Five Tips to Keep Your Business Viable During the Economic Slowdown

Nobody knows in what direction the economic crisis will take us over the next few months (even years), but it’s highly likely we’re going to be living with it for quite some time.

As a small business owner, you are more closely connected to your employees and your customers than large companies, and you should see this as an advantage.  Here are some useful ideas on how to approach your business in the midst of economic instability.

1) Think outside the box. When business slows down and the future is uncertain, your first impulse will naturally be to take caution. But sometimes, if you go about it intelligently, risk-taking isn’t necessarily reckless during a bad economy.

You can still make adaptations to your company, even significant modifications and restructuring of your business plan, without spending a lot of money.

Be creative; brainstorm new ideas. Maybe try using some of the social websites like YouTube, Facebook, or MySpace to reach out to your local community online. You can focus on developing your local search marketing on the internet search engines or do some joint venture projects with other local merchants in your area. As the cliche goes, necessity is the mother of invention! Producing innovative ideas to help navigate your business through tough times and poor performing periods is not just a proactive way to produce tangible cost-saving benefits. It can also be a great motivator.

There’s always a chance you might make mistakes. Realistically assessing what you can and cannot afford to risk is a constant aspect of running a business.

2) Project a steady, confident manner. The economy is teetering on the brink, and people are rightly nervous. They will often gravitate toward somebody who is assured and optimistic, somebody who is keen on solving problems rather than worrying and assuming the worst.

Your staff and customers as well will respond to this. You may have to make some difficult decisions, such as reducing staff, or changing your business operations in a manner your employees may find disruptive.

If they look to you as a leader they can trust, it will minimize their fears and help keep morale as high as possible under the circumstances.

3) Motivate your employees.. It is crucial to maintain morale, and maintain a sense of productivity.

Decline in business in a troubled economy, when people sense their jobs might not be safe, will cause considerable stress. But these troubled times don’t have to be a source of stagnation and despondency. Morale can suffer, especially if you’ve already suffered job losses. Make your staff understand they are working toward a common goal by asking their perspectives and scheduling staff meetings to keep them in the loop.

I talked about brainstorming earlier. Your staff can and should play a roll in that process. People who know they have a direct stake in the business are a great source of ideas.

4) Keep your customers in the loop. Maintaining contact with your established customer base is of huge importance when the economy and your company might be taking a beating. Remember, they are feeling the pinch as much as your company is, and will appreciate that you understand their insecurity. Use your contact information to maintain open lines of communication with your clients, sending emails or snail-mail updates on any changes you might be making.

Use real time communications like Twitter to stay in touch with your customers (see Twitter for Business for more on Twitter). Regularly update your website with postings about how your company is handling the recession and addressing customers’ needs. If you are making changes that customers will be aware of, don’t act like it’s business as usual

Respect the intelligence of your customers. You will maintain their trust by acknowledging the realities on the ground. Don’t get me wrong: your customers need to know that despite any difficulties, your business is still strong and functional, and will remain responsive to their needs.

5) Come up with ways to keep your customers’ business.

No matter how well your company is doing, customers appreciate deals and bonuses for their continued patronage. It is important that you have some sort of loyalty program that can track and reward your loyal customers. And when they are pinching pennies, special offers to your VIP customers will mean even more, providing you with a competitive edge and encouraging loyalty.

So in summary: if you maintain a positive attitude, project leadership, team up with your employees to maintain outside-the-box thinking and morale, and keep in touch with your customers to maintain loyalty and respond to their shifting priorities, you stand a better chance of not only living through the recession, but thriving in it.

Hi Folks!

What is coming out to be a behavioral pattern on my part, I sleep late and still get up early with only the occasional yawn and eye-rubbing rituals. I clean up, struggle into my clothes, made sure my socks are matched, and head out the door.

It was 6:00am and I have to rush. I started my trusty Year 2000 Toyota Unser van outfitted with a self-made water-fuel HHO booster (tech plug!!), and I was off. Despite my sleepiness, I was excited.

The early-morning webinar sessions are back after a brief hiatus! I say it’s about time! :)

Alex was bringing in an expert to talk about video marketing, and he brought in the Queen of them all: The Video Marketing Queen: Maria Andros.

Who Is Maria Andros?

Well, I knew about Maria when Alex mentioned her when he was giving a webinar that involved Twitter. He mentioned before that in Twitter, you can actually find the biggest guns in IM history just interacting with everybody. And boy, that lady is quite active in there!

What I Learned During the Webinar

The webinar was a short 2.5 hours, but it left me with a lot information to digest!

One thing’s for sure: I’m gonna throw myself into Youtube!

Don’t get me wrong. Video is absolutely new territory for me. And after publishing my goals for the next 365 days in my previous post, I’m going to make an adjustment and include video into my online marketing repertoire! Maria and Alex simply convinced me it is so crucial to my marketing campaign!

Video marketing is a part of internet marketing that you simply cannot ignore. Any IM worth his salt IS on video. Name any guru off the top of your head: Mike Filsaime, Michael Cheney, Jason James, and they have used video to devastating effect.

I remember the time before I signed up with Alex’s Coaching Program. I watched his video presentation for a week because I wanted to fully understand him. I was qualifying him to see if he was worth the money I’m going to pay for his experience.

I was hooked.
